Fish Out of Water

Transcript

My name is Edgar Duncan jr. I live in Pasadena, California. My origin story is that of revelation. Revelation of creative talent. Growing up I was a different kind of kid than the ones around me. I was born and raised in central, Texas in the mid 1960s to the mid 80s. I wasn't into hunting or sports. I was unique and I struggled to understand this uniqueness at times. I felt like a fish out of water. One of my earliest memories of my creative self was when I was 7. My mom took me to see my first film, Mary Poppins. The little boy who went into that theatre was not the same one who emerged from it. I was transformed. A spark had been ignited in me, fueling my imagination and creative spirit. And it has not waned since. For starters, I would never stop drawing and creating. As a kid, I could spend hours prying rhinestones from some of my grandmother's costume jewelry from the 1930s and 40s.

These glass gems would go on to live other lives, as emerald -colored eyes glued to an unsuspecting figurine, or sparkling diamond and ruby head and taillights on my matchbox cars. I made disaster movies, using my family's Super 8 camera, heavy on the spectacle, a burning zeppelin hung between two trees in the backyard, a doomed model ocean liner lost in a dry ice fog on the ping -pong table, all with accompanying movie posters. Reflecting back on all of these creative endeavors, this was not just a passion, but my salvation. I will forever be thankful for the love and support of my family, teachers, and mentors who recognize and supported my uniqueness and help this fish find his water. I am still drawing and creating.
