My name is Omari Lewis, and I am a trans non-binary visual artist from the Bay Area, now residing in Brooklyn. My work is deeply rooted in the culmination of experiences that have shaped my artistic career—a journey of resilience, growth, and self-discovery. After being unable to afford art school, I took a leap of faith and moved to New York to pursue my passion for art. Without formal training, I carved my path by seizing opportunities that came my way. From tattoo apprenticeships to painting commercial advertisements with Colossal Media, I worked tirelessly to develop my own unique style. Each step was hard-earned, often requiring me to prove my worth in spaces that were reluctant to give me a chance. One of my most personal projects, the Origins Box, serves as a reflection of this journey. Designed with a stained glass effect, the 12x12 transparent cube features decoupaged samples from my sketchbooks, each piece representing a pivotal moment in my artistic evolution. Central to the design is a koi fish, a symbol of the confidence I first felt while learning to draw during my tattoo apprenticeship. The box embodies the challenges and triumphs that have defined my path, offering a visual narrative of perseverance and transformation. Through it all, I’ve encountered incredible individuals who extended kindness, grace, and encouragement, inspiring me to keep going. These connections have been the foundation of my journey and a testament to the power of community and belief in one another. My art celebrates resilience and serves as a message to those who are struggling—financially, mentally, or emotionally. To young artists facing challenges: it does get better. Everything you dream of is within reach, and there are people who will see your light and support your vision. To the doubters, the naysayers, and the barriers, I say: you are not the end of the story. My work stands as a testament to the beauty that emerges when you push through adversity and share your truth with the world. I hope my art inspires love, joy, and courage in those who encounter it.
